In my previous article, I talked about what does seek ye first the Kingdom of God mean, and I mentioned that this was just an introduction of a long discussion which is going to take a couple of lessons.
In this discussion however, we will pause a little and answer this question that has been asked by many people. Is there power in the blood of Jesus? Join me as walk this journey together.
To start with,
I grew up in a mixed environment/cultures whereby African Traditional Religion (ATR) were intertwined with Christianity and many people could hardly differentiate the two.
In some occasions, I used to see elders slaughtering goats and of course this was a plus sign because meat was plenty. In my naivety, I thought that this was just a normal celebration.
At times when elders came to our homestead, I could see traditional brew being served in calabashes. Simultaneously, elders could share the goat head commonly known as “mutwe wa mbui” which was an obvious culmination of the occasion.
During the process of goat slaughtering (which I hated most), specific elders could speak certain words similar to the enchanting or creed done at the time of poured liquor on the ground.
This, in my innocence bothered me because these aged men seemed to speak to guests I couldn’t see. When I grew up, I learned that these were sacrifices done on family altars raised a long time ago. It wasn’t easy to deal with these altars later after becoming spiritually aligned (topic for another day).
having canceled the charge of our legal indebtedness, which stood against us and condemned us; he has taken it away, nailing it to the cross (Colossians 2:14).
In my background, people used to go to church, but still indulge in all kinds of sinfulness. The reason they still clinged on offering sacrifices is because they doubted the power in the blood of Jesus. What about you? Do you believe that the blood of Jesus has power to save, to cleanse, wash, sustain, and offer protection to your entire life?
Proof that the Blood of Jesus has Unlimited Power
In case you feel like pausing, I urge you to stay with me a little further and I will show you enough proof from the scripture that the blood of Jesus is unique in so many ways.
Now, let’s embark on answering our question: Is there power in the blood of Jesus? Now, let’s consider the following facts.
First, why “BLOOD“?
I know many people including you and I at one point, silently or publicly asked this question “why blood” in forgiveness of sins?
- The life of an animal is in the blood, (Leviticus 17:11-12)
As I have just said, there are so many people who still don’t understand why we talk of blood when it comes to sacrifices, salvation, forgiveness, etc. I’d like to point out that the reason as to why blood is associated with all I’ve mentioned above is because the life of every creature is in the blood.
Wait a minute, how is this significant? God warned the Israelites not to eat blood or an animal still with blood in it because life is contained therein. In verse 11, God said that He had given blood to be used as an atonement for their sins on an altar.
Now is this why I could see elders sacrificing goats? Partly yes, because the devil doesn’t have anything original, he’s a copy cat, he copies everything from God.
When you read on verse 14, God commanded the Israelite to drain blood from an animal first before eating it then cover the blood with earth because it contains the life of that animal.
Why is blood the only valid element of atonement for sin? Hebrews 9:22 says that the law required that nearly everything be cleansed by blood. When man sinned against God in Genesis 3:1-11, he traded his life for disobedience. To redeem this life back, life has to be lost that’s why Christ gave up His life as a ransom of sin once for all (Mark 10:45).
2. The Power in Blood of Jesus is from the Source
The power of everything depends on the source. Let’s take for example, vehicles, to define the performance of any car, you must look at the capacity of the engine horsepower. To understand the power in the blood of Jesus you must understand where He came from.
Jesus came from heaven but was born like a man through the virgin birth, Luke 1:30-40. From britanica.com, we learn the doctrine of incarnation whereby “God became flesh, that God assumed a human nature and became a man in the form of Jesus Christ, the Son of God.”
Jesus confirmed that He came from heaven to do the will of Him who sent Him here on earth (John 6:38). With this we understand that Jesus’ origin was from heaven and there was no man’s activity (sexual act) in His birth. Due to this, we fully know that He (Jesus) was fully God (Titus 2:13-14) who embodied Himself in a human body to accomplish things of the flesh – to eventually die for our sins.
3. The blood of Jesus was Sinless
Are you still figuring out an answer to our question is there power in the blood of Jesus? As a matter of more solid biblical proof, the virgin birth as discussed above can easily be connected to Jesus’ absolute sinless life while here on earth. In 1Peter 2:22, the bible says that he committed no sin, and no deceit was found in him.
Also in 2Corinthians 5:21, God made Christ who had no sin to be sin for us so that we might become righteous before God. The power in the blood of Jesus is generated by the aspect of holiness. As we know that one of God’s major attributes is holiness (1Peter 1:15-16). We also are called upon to be holy as He is.
4. Everything was Created By Him, Through Him
When we read the book of Genesis 1:1-2, we see that in the beginning, God created the heaven and the earth. The entire chapter 1 of Genesis unveils the creation history which was made possible by God’s omnipotent power. In Genesis 17:1, God reveals Himself as God Almighty (El-Shaddai in Hebrew) – which is all about His power.
But when it comes to Jesus Christ, we learn that He was the Word which was with God in the beginning and this Word was God (John 1:1-2). As we continue reading, we learn that everything was created through this Word, and nothing is created without Him that was created (John 1:3; Colossians 1:16).
If everything was created through Christ and for Christ (due to His power) what about His blood of Him through which everything was Created? By this somebody should start feeling the power in this blood! I mean somebody should be shouting a big hallelujah by now because we are talking about the blood of Jesus, the Word from which the entire creation came from!
What did the Blood of Jesus Accomplish?
- It washes every kind of sin
All sinners have something to celebrate about because the blood of Jesus has power to wash and cleanse them from every kind of sinfulness, 1John 1:7. By this we know that whoever goes to God in repentance will receive forgiveness of sins (1John 1:8-9).
The power of the blood of Christ is God sent for those who are willing to accept the ways of GOD without doubt. In 1Peter 1:18-19 the blood of Jesus was shed for our sake. We also read in Hebrews 9:14 that all who trust in Christ are washed in His blood and are fully cleansed and set apart for service.
2. Through the blood of Jesus, we receive healing, 1Peter 2:23-24.
When Jesus was on the cross, hanging there, he was thirsty and they gave Him a vinegar, after He finished taking it He said “it is finished.” Jesus Christ said so having known that He has accomplished everything He had come to do (John 19:28-30).
Though the blood of Jesus is not in any way magical it is nonetheless crucial and foundational in helping us receive every benefit whatsoever from God
3. The Blood of Jesus Deals with Generational Curses
The bible in Exodus 20:4-5, tells us that God who is a jealous God hates idolatry and punishes children for the sin of their parents to the third and fourth generation of those who hate Him. In Colossians 2:14 however, Paul said that “having cancelled the charges that stood against us and condemned us; and every written code/curse/indebtedness, He took it away by nailing it to the cross.
4. This Blood of Jesus is More Powerful Than Any Other
Jesus came from the heavenly tabernacle, not man made, and entered the holy of holies as the High Priest with His own blood once and for all, Hebrews 9:10-14. His blood is more powerful than that of bulls and goats. This blood speaks better things than the blood of Abel (Hebrews 12:24), and louder on our behalf in the heavenly tabernacle – God’s throne of grace (Hebrews 4:16).
What situation seems to be speaking in your life? I have good news; it doesn’t matter what voices you are hearing in your life all you need is to allow the blood of Jesus to speak in that situation
5. Jesus’ Blood Clears Even the Conscience of a Sinner
The blood of goats, bulls and heifer cleanses those who are ceremonially unclean and can only perform outward cleansing. The blood of Jesus however, through the eternal Spirit, was offered as unblemished to God has power to cleanse the conscience from the acts that led to death and condemnation.
The blood of Jesus cleanses us and activates every dormant conscience by making it pure and alive again to reject all traces of sin hence making us holy and righteous before God.
6. By His Blood, Jesus Dealt with Satan & Dark Forces
First, in 1Corinthians 2:8, the rulers and principalities of this age did not understand what they did for if they did they would not have crucified Jesus. They didn’t know that by crucifying Christ was a knockout to Satan’s mission (Colossians 2:14-15).
Jesus triumphed over Satan on the cross and that’s why the temple curtains split into two indicating that by His death (blood) everyone who believed Him gained access to the Father (Matthew 27:51-53). The righteous people who had died rose from the dead and were witnesses everywhere they went.
In 1John 3:8, Jesus came so that he can destroy Satan and his works. This is one of the major triumphal accolades to every devout believer.
7. Through His Blood, Jesus Bought Us Back to God
When man sinned, he was alienated from God. In Colossians 1:21-22, Paul Says that we were even enemies of God in our minds but through Christ’s body (blood), we were reconciled back to God. This is one of the main accomplishments of the finished work of the cross.
The scripture reveals our condition when used to live in sin. We were lost and separated from God but Jesus gave up Himself for us, and by His blood He paid all the price (Galatians 3:13-15; 2Corinthians 5:11-21). Now, we are new creatures in the Lord the old is gone.
To Conclude…
In this post, we’ve walked together in pursuit of answering this question: Is there power in the blood of Jesus? We’ve discussed important facts and truths from the scriptures that proof beyond considerable doubt that indeed the blood of Jesus has inexplicable power.
Notably, as explained in this article, the death of Jesus is one of the major events that overturned the spiritual arena into a totally different dispensation. Satan and his allies (the dark world) were disarmed on the cross and ashamed publicly by Master Jesus (Colossians 2:15).
For us believers, Jesus, at His death, went to hades, made proclamations to spirits and took back the keys from Satan (1Peter 3:18-19; Revelation 1:18). This then ushered us into a new realm of victory to victory, if indeed we will shield ourselves with this blood.

Powerful article. God bless you sir, you well explained and now we understand why our elders do the act of slaughtering animals in occasions. We’ve learned that blood has life. Thanks to God whose blood is all powerful n speaks better things. Ni
You as a believer must be very cautious about every occasion you are asked to bring an animal for slaughtering. In my own experience I found out that many people are involved in giving sacrifices to idols in the name of celebration. No other blood should replace the blood of Jesus Christ that was shed on the cross once for all.
